There seems to be a cupcake trend these days but no matter how complex or tasty those baked goodies might get, there are so many different kinds of other confections out there! Shortbread, of course, is that classic, crumbly confection made of three simple ingredients:  1 part white sugar, 2 parts butter, and 3 parts flour.  While they are dry and brittle they are anything but bland. Another treat that is quite crumbly—but a lot more furtive—is the candy known simply as brittle.  Brittle is, basically, hard candy embedded with nuts.  It derives from many different parts of the world, with different regions developing their own variations. As such, you can find brittle recipes originating from Bangladesh, France, Georgia, Greece, India, and also other parts of Asia and the Middle East.

In the West, peanut brittle may be the most common or quickly recognized, but you can also find recipes for almond, pecan, and pistachio brittles as well.


One of the most iconic sweet treats in the world is the French confection known simply as the macaron.  Meringue-filled macarons are made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, ground almond powder, and, perhaps, color sources (like food coloring, or color culled from fruits or vegetables).  The macaron is known for its sandwich-esque qualities, and its filling can consist of ganache, buttercream, or jam.  The macaron can also come in just about any flavor you can imagine, like: citrus, chocolate, raspberry, lemon, pistachio, orange, coffee, mango, hazelnut, maple, vanilla, caramel.


Finally, you can never really go wrong with a classic French chocolate truffle.  These are the traditional chocolate bon-bon in a bite which is typically made of chocolate ganache coated in chocolate or cocoa powder or chopped nuts or toasted nuts.   Truffles can come in a wide variety of flavors:
