Difference between 304 and 316 and 304L and 316L cost wise and corrosion resistance wise

Stainless steel provides an attractive, clean finish with low maintenance cost. Dual certified stainless steel tubing 304/304L and 316/316L are the workhorse grades for a variety of instrumentation and hydraulic applications. These are the most versatile and widely acceptable material which gives the best performance among the stainless steel. SS 316L SSEAMLESS TUBE is available in seamless as well welded and as round, square and rectangular shapes. These are comes in various sizes, thickness, diameters and ranges as per the requirements. These are mainly used for pressure operations in extremely corrosive environments.

304 or 316 and 304L or 316L are the American AISI basic grades of stainless steel only the practical difference between them is carbon content; the “L” means the lower carbon content. The carbon ranges are 0.08% maximum for 304 and 316 and 0.030% maximum for the 304L and 316L types. In the earlier days the application of these steels identified the problem, so the lower carbon ‘variants’ (316L) were established as alternatives to the ‘standards’ (316) carbon range grade to overcome the risk of inter crystalline corrosion. The difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel is the presence of molybdenum, which provides a much higher degree of corrosion resistance. 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel while 316 contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. As 316 stainless steel made up of 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, its corrosion resistance increases particularly against chlorides and other industrial solvents. Their non reactive qualities also make it usable in pharmaceutical industries for the manufacture of medical surgical instruments in order to avoid excessive metallic contamination.

316 stainless steel is commonly used in many industrial applications due to its well known features and chemical composition as well mechanical properties. There are number of 316L STAINLESS STEEL TUBE MANUFACTURERS in India, Reliable Pipes & Tubes Ltd. is the popular one amongst all. They are the major supplier of these 304 and 316 stainless steel tubes in India as well across it. Type 304, with its chromium-nickel content and low carbon, is the most versatile and widely used of the austenitic stainless steels and Type 316 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless and heat-resisting steel with superior corrosion resistance, alloy contains molybdenum bearing it has a greater resistance to chemical attack than 304. Type 316 stainless steel costs a little more than the 304 stainless steel.
